While the offspring was enjoying the swimming platform in the bay, I swam beyond the wave breakers for my first proper open water swim of the year: 1.7m swells at fast intervals made me feel small & provided a nice experience outside my comfort zone.
Us #webperf folk are all cast from a similar mold, aren’t we? We like to optimize everything, want to raise goats (or Alpaca) & we enjoy open water swims. #beLikeSteve
Stephen King’s “It” has a strong subtext about child abuse: something monstrous is happening to kids in the town of Derry and adults turn a blind eye. I knew that.
What I only just now realized is how this ties in with “We all float down here” and Georgie’s boat: he gets advice how to make the boat float, then runs outside to play (he is “buoyant”!) but crashes into a barrier labeled “Derry Public Works” (because Derry’s public DOESN’T work as it should, i.e. protecting its kids from abusers), thereby losing his boat & buoyancy. When “It” (the embodied abuse) proposes to Georgie to join them because “they all float down here”, this is because the children become hollowed out by their abuse. They become shells of their former selves (also displayed in other parts of the story as a consequence of looking into It’s light) and as hollow shells, they FLOAT – an analogy to Georgie’s boat lesson from the prologue.
My mind is now sufficiently blown, Mr. King (esp. as some of your other works are nothing short of vulgar & sexist). #reading #books #abuse
It’s good to be back.
“Refused” were amazing last night! Excellently staged performance, powerful political message & loads of fun. ๐งท๐ค #concerts #punk #cologne
